Ross County women lose out to Elgin City in dramatic finish
17/02/2025
Late drama would go against Ross County Women in their top of the table clash against Elgin City at the Gleaner Arena on Sunday.
County went into the match three points clear of their closest rivals at the top of the SWFL North, but with Elgin having a game in hand whoever ran out victors would be in the driving seat for the league title - and the single promotion play-off spot that comes with it.
Perhaps in a sign of the quality both teams have shown so far this season, it took until the very end of the first half for the deadlock to be broken.
Unfortunately for County, it went the way of their hosts, who took the lead thanks to Alexa Mann's finish.
The second half was a similarly hard-fought affair, but County would equalise just as the 90 minutes were up through Abi Coltherd.
While that could have been salvation or even scope to push on for a winner, there would be another twist in the tale going Elgin's way, as they found a winning goal courtesy of Darcy Matheson right at the death to seal all three points.
County remain top of the table on goal difference, but Elgin still have the advantage of a game in hand.
After rare back-to-back defeats, County will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend when they go on the road to Stonehaven.
Stonehaven sit seventh in the SWFL North, and drew 0-0 against Aberdeen last time out.
