Staggies Women continue winning run against Huntly
03/02/2025
Rhea Hossack passed 20 goals in all competitions for Ross County Women this season as she claimed another brace against Huntly in SWFL North action last Sunday.
After a venue change for the second consecutive week, this time to Alness Academy, County were kept to single digits for the first time in 2025 but still ran out comfortable winners against a side that would have been hoping to challenge at the top end of the league table.
Mollie Parker, fresh off a spell in Malaysia representing Scotland at the Under-19s Cricket World Cup, opened the scoring when she headed in Daisy Fraser’s corner kick in the 18th minute.
Abi Coltherd would then use her explosive pace to fashion a shooting opportunity on the left corner of the box, but saw her effort clip the top of the bar on its way over.
Fraser would turn provider again before half time, though, slipping in Rhea Hossack who had already been denied by the Huntly goalkeeper on multiple occasions.
This time receiving the ball with her back to goal, Hossack would need to use her strength to hold off her marker and go around the keeper to roll in and make it 2-0 five minutes before half time.
Leah Mearns would pull one back for the visitors from the penalty spot nine minutes after the restart, but it did not take long for County to pull away again.
Right on the hour mark, Agnes Hooper slipped Coltherd in behind a high Huntly defence, and although the Orkney native had most of the opposition half to cover she charged forward and fired into the net to make it 3-1.
Hossack should have added a fourth for County when Fraser broke forward and played a perfectly-weighted through ball for the club’s top scorer, who went round the goalkeeper but fired over from what ended up being a tight angle.
County would get a penalty of their own in the 79th minute, which after teeing up others all afternoon Fraser would step up to take – making no mistake as she sent the Huntly goalkeeper the wrong way.
There was still time for another goal to add to the tally, though, as County would win the ball back in Huntly’s half late on to create one last chance to score.
Again, it was Fraser feeding in Hossack, who this time wrong-footed Huntly’s keeper to go around her and leave herself an easy tap in to make it 5-1.
The victory sees County remain at the top of the SWFL North table, but now they are three points clear after rivals Elgin City were instead in action in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup against St Johnstone.
This Sunday Ross County will be in cup action themselves, taking part in the quarter finals of the Regional League Cup.
County are due to host Cumbernauld Colts at the Highland Football Academy, with kick off set for 3.15pm.
