Staggies Women narrowly bow out of League Cup

On a day of cup upsets across the UK, Ross County Women saw their League Cup run come to an end at the quarter final stage.
County had topped their group at the end of the summer to make it into the knockout rounds, and were drawn at home against Cumbernauld Colts in the last eight.
Once again there was a late change of venue, with the Highland Football Academy pitch frozen and forcing a switch to Alness Academy instead.
The first half did not produce a litany of chances, but the game became increasingly physical and fierce as play progressed.
It was Cumbernauld who broke the deadlock on the brink of half time, though, with Lucy Foye finding her way clear of County’s defence and picking out the bottom corner.
The second half became a somewhat ill-tempered on both sides’ part, and a number of fouls made it difficult for a proper rhythm to establish itself.
Naturally it was County who were pushing for a leveler as time ticked down to try and stay both in the match and the competition.
Cumbernauld defended well, though, making vital blocks to deny County’s attackers a route to goal, and the visitors would hold out to seal a 1-0 victory.
While County’s dealings with knockout football are over for the season, they will now focus all of their efforts on their title bid in the SWFL North.
Next up for the league leaders is a trip to their closest challengers, Elgin City, in what could be regarded as a title decided by the end of the season.
