Staggies Women with resounding win over Buchan

29/04/2025

Ross County Women recorded their biggest victory of the season as they recorded a 16-0 triumph over Buchan last Sunday.

Abi Coltherd led the way for County, scoring six goals of her own, ably backed up by a hat-trick from Keira Syrjanen and a bountiful haul from several other teammates too.

The trip to Peterhead proved to be a fruitful one for County, who went in as heavy favourites against a side yet to pick up a point in the SWFL North this season.

However, even with their higher position in the league table the scale of the result could not have been expected, with Abi Coltherd opening the scoring inside two minutes.

Orkney winger Coltherd would score twice more to complete her hat-trick before the 20-minute mark, when Keira Syrjanen got in on the act to make it 4-0.

Coltherd and Syrjanen would score another apiece before Rhiannon Ebrihem added to her recent good form in front of goal by scoring County’s seventh in the 29th minute.

That was how the scoreline read at half time, but instead of resting on their laurels County continued to put Buchan to the sword in the second half.

Daisy Fraser scored within two minutes of the restart, with Lorca Macleod also quickly adding to the scoreline.

Syrjanen completed her own hat-trick in the 51st minute to bring up double figures for the team, before Coltherd scored her personal fifth and sixth of the afternoon by the hour mark.

Syrjanen’s younger sister Teagan made it an unlucky 13, but that was still not all as County would score three more in the final 10 minutes to cap off a relentless display.

Maimie Zimmerman claimed the first of those, with Teagan Syrjanen and Ebrihem each scoring their second goals of the afternoon to make the score 16-0 at the final whistle.

The three points, and more pressingly the margin of victory, saw County move back up the table into second on goal difference ahead of Grampian with two games left to play in the season.

Their title hopes are officially gone, with Elgin City having caught up on multiple games in hand over the last week or two to move into an unassailable lead at the top of the table with 15 wins out of 15.

Ross County’s next game is their last home match of the season, hosting Westdyke on Saturday, May 10.
