It was a case of two games, two wins for the Staggies tonight as they claimed their second group phase win of the Betfred Cup with a 4-0 victory over Brechin. Another double from Ross Stewart, a tap in from Billy McKay and a great counter-attacking goal from Blair Spittal made it 6 points from 6.
County came out of the traps very quickly and were it not for some lucky deflections for the home team could have been a couple up within 15 minutes. The breakthrough did eventually come. Following on from his two goals on Saturday, Ross Stewart found the ball at his feet from a cleared corner. The striker needed no invitation to dispatch his shot which rocketed past the goalkeeper making it just under the bar from 15 yards.
It wouldn’t be until late in the first half when County would double their lead. Some neat one-two play in the box led the ball to the feet of Ross Stewart who had no hesitation in placing the ball between the keepers legs and in to the back of the net.
County took a 3-0 lead shortly in to the second half. Again, Ross Stewart found himself through on goal with only the keeper to beat. His shot was fired across goal and Billy McKay was at the back post to tap it home from only 2 yards.
The final goal was nothing short of the perfect counter attack. A Brechin City corner was cleared out to Harry Paton on the left. Paton, spotting the run of Blair Spittal lifted the ball over the remaining defender and set Spittal through one-on-one. From the edge of the box Spittal claimed his first goal for the Staggies as they rounded off another impressive night of action in this season’s Betfred Cup.
