Ross County returned to competitive action today as they swept aside League 1 Montrose in the first group match of the Betfred Cup. Goals from Josh Mullin and Billy Mckay on either side of a Ross Stewart brace sealed a first win of the new campaign.
In a lively start the Staggies took the lead on 7 minutes. Jamie Lindsay set off on a powerful run from his own half before neatly sending the ball to Mullin on the left-hand side of the box. Taking a touch to set himself, Mullin dispatched a tasty finish across goal and in to the top corner of the net.
Only 6 minutes later the Staggies doubled their lead. Ross Stewart driving through the Montrose back line and slotting the ball past Lennox in the Montrose goal. As the first half continued it took two top drawer saves from Ross Laidlaw to keep out the visitors.
The Staggies took a 3-0 lead minutes after the restart. Ross Stewart bagging his brace with a clinical header at the back post from a Josh Mullin cross.
Montrose, who worked very hard during the game, managed to get on the scoresheet. Matty Allan picked up on some loose defending before seeing his shot take a slight deflection and going beyond Staggies keeper Ross Laidlaw.
Chances fell to Spittal and Lindsay who failed to beat the Montrose keeper. However, a fourth goal would come with only minutes remaining. Billy Mckay was played through on goal and the striker chipped beyond the on-rushing goalkeeper. The match also saw a home debut for Simon Power who showed some great signs of what he can offer to the squad.
