Ross County continued their winning streak in this seasons Betfred Cup after coming from a goal down to defeat St Johnstone 2-1. A double from Billy McKay ensured the Staggies made it 9 points from 9 in Group B.
St Johnstone started the livelier of the two teams and in 7 minutes were awarded a penalty kick of a foul on Chris Kane. Full back Scott Tanser stepped up and knocked the ball in to the net, to the right of Laidlaw.
On the half hour mark County levelled. It was penalty number 2 of the match as Ross Stewart was floored in the box. McKay took the penalty and Zander Clark in the St Johnstone goal made a very good safe to keep it out but was helpless to McKay’s follow up effort which was emphatically tucked away.
As the 1st half drew to a close it looked like the game would be stalemate at the break. However, Billy McKay had other ideas. The striker managed to get between the two centre backs of St Johnstone to latch on to a Blair Spittal pass and send the ball across Clark and in to the bottom right hand corner of the net.
The second half saw no more goals, but the action didn’t stop. The best chance of the half fell only 4 minutes after the break. Spittal sent through Ross Stewart who saw his effort very well saved by Clark. Sean Kelly followed up with a driving strike, but Clark managed to recover to and grasp Kelly’s effort.
It was another solid 3 points on the road for the Staggies in this tough Betfred Cup group. It was also a fantastic test of character for the team having to come from 1 goal down to claim the 3 points. On to Wednesday night now where we host Forfar in our final group match.
